If your upper teeth stick out too far past your lower teeth, you probably like what is called an overbite. Many people are uncomfortable with their overbite, self-conscious about the way it looks, and worried about their oral health. You may have considered seeking out treatment, but aren’t sure what your options are beyond braces. Can an overbite even be treated without braces? Well, the team at New Braunfels Braces is here to tell you that, yes, there are alternative methods to correct an overbite!

How To Treat An Overbite Without Braces

Without any orthodontic treatment, an overbite can eventually cause jaw pain including TMJ, wearing and enamel erosion of the teeth, problems eating, speech issues, and increased risk of decay and gum disease. One surefire way to correct an overbite is, of course, traditional braces. Some people are hesitant to commit to braces, though. Luckily, there are other methods that can work well to correct mild to moderate overbites.

Invisalign

New Braunfels Braces offers Invisalign as a treatment option for overbites. Invisalign uses custom-made, clear plastic aligners that gradually move the teeth into place. The aligners work similarly to traditional braces, but have the benefit of being clear - for discretion - and removable - for flexibility. Not only does Invisalign avoid many of the lifestyle changes that come with braces, they are more comfortable and often take less time to work. Our orthodontists will be able to tell you if you are a candidate for Invisalign, or if more advanced methods are required for your overbite.

Appliances

Orthodontic appliances may be an option for patients struggling with an overbite. Sometimes these orthodontic treatment techniques work for adults, but they are more often used in children and teenagers whose jaws are still growing. Appliances can be used independently or in conjunction with other treatment methods, depending on the severity of the issue. The most effective appliance depends on your specific situation, but the most commonly used is known as a palatal expander. This device is attached to the upper molars and works by gently and painlessly widening the upper jaw. This is done by using a special key to turn a screw in the middle of the device that adds pressure to each half of the jaw. Palatal expanders offer the chance to treat bite problems early before a more complex treatment is required.
